Sleeper (1999)
Ballantynes
1st September - 15th October 2002

Sleeper was presented on two adjacent monitors - a kind of split perspective, the result of filming the same space but at different times. The artist incorporated aspects of cinéma vérité (hand-held camera and with as little studio intervention as possible) alongside 'constructed truth' - that is 'reality' which is the result of lighting and post-production editing techniques. The location was a child's bedroom: on one screen the child slept, on the other a mobile of the night sky floated, all to the sound of a compelling lullaby. ("Dream Baby Dream" from the album I Love NY by Angel Corpus Christi). This tender encapsulation of a sleeping child has been included in a number of exhibitions quite possibly because of its quiet and unassuming, poignant quality. It is a personal portrait: the stars and moons of the turning mobile are like ever watchful, guardian angel eyes.
