The Antarctic Images Project
Transport Annex, Transport Gallery, Canterbury Museum
5th September - 3rd November 2002

The Antarctic Images Project investigated, through several alternative time-scales, contrasting cultural interpretations of The Ice, as both practical and exotic terrain. Ed Osborn had three elements, Flyover, Webcam and Home Footage, simultaneously projected on to adjacent walls of the Transport Annex, where their juxtaposition created a sense of the past and of disembodied communication over a great distance. Flyover comprised aerial reconnaissance photo sequences mapping the Ross Dependency in the 1960s. These were supplemented by a voice over reading excerpts from the Provisional Gazetter of the Ross Dependency. For Home Footage Osborn edited a collection of home videos shot by various people over the years. Incorporated with this was a selection of webcam images compiled from webcam data from the various bases. By creating alternating views of life on Antarctica, Osborn projected a re-assessment of what the continent encompasses.
