Permanent Work
The Radii
by Marcus Moore was commissioned by the Carter Group in 2000
for The Crossing retail complex/bus interchange and was officially
opened on 1st November 2000, as part of Art & Industry 2000.
The Radii is a programmed kinetic sculpture that acts as
an arbitrary timepiece. It has two wheel-tipped shafts projecting
from the wall that 'cross over' on the hour. Here the work suggests
the connotation and function of its site; a crossing being where
two points meet and two opposing directions intersect. Its movement
accentuates the site's association with passage and travel and adds
a further dimension of access to the architects' plan. The sculpture
also reflects the history of the site, as its design is influenced
by the neoclassical architectural style of the original 1930s building
The Crossing is heir to. At the same time, however, its sleek and
accurate geometry suggests a futuristic construction.
