Picture book The Butler's New Clothes is the latest collaborative venture by artists Julia Morison and Heather Straka, who as Madame & The Bastard (or in this case, Madame & The Butler) have exhibited throughout New Zealand and on national television.

Following the sartorial misadventures of The Butler, the book combines surreal, cartoon elements with photographic textures and varied typography.

Orchestrating and conducting Madame & The Bastard Morison and Straka have produced large-scale photographic work that has been shown at the Jonathan Smart Gallery, Christchurch; the Dunedin Public Art Gallery; the Janne Land Gallery, Wellington and the Gow Langsford Gallery in Auckland. For visual arts biennial Art & Industry 2000 they produced a series of short films (entitled do black) that were screened during commercial time on TV One. The films and the photographic series centre on two elusive characters, Madame & The Bastard, whose faces are never seen. The Butler's New Clothes is the artists' first book and its protagonists can be seen as a development of the characters present in their art. Local schoolchildren were among the first readers at special book signings and giveaways by author Julia Morison at Christchurch Central City Library during SCAPE in September 2002.

The Butler's New Clothes was made possible with the generous support of The Canterbury Foundation. To order, please see the Publications page.
