introduction

From the 1st of September to the 30th November 2004 the SCAPE Biennial 04 presented an inspired collection of Arts events, coordinating contributions from leading local, national and international artists into its most ambitious Biennial to date.

Since its inception in 1999, Art & Industry has dedicated itself to bringing contemporary artwork to the civic sphere through SCAPE, New Zealand’s only dedicated biennial of urban arts. Bringing together every two years, progressive corporations, local businesses, public funders and leading national and international artists to create a dynamic programme of exhibitions and site-specific iinstallations for the city of Christchurch.

1 September – 30 November 04

Art & Industry’s Urban Arts Biennials provide a forum for local and national artists and curators, with contributions from international artists, in collaboration with industry, to develop and show their work. The Biennials are intended to contribute to local/national contemporary art debate, as well as to encourage a dynamic and rich visual arts culture in Christchurch. The Biennials are developed to include both permanent and temporary public artworks, many of which are site-specific installations and exhibitions.

Marking a significant development in the evolution of the Art & Industry Urban Arts Biennial, the leading theme for the SCAPE Biennial 04 was the influence of the Asia Pacific region on the cultural evolution of Aotearoa New Zealand, portraying the optimism and history of this country’s cultural growth and giving the Biennial a rich and varied international component.
