SCAPE Biennial Seeks Curators for 2006
The Art & Industry Biennial Trust is inviting Expressions
of Interest from New Zealand and international curators to become part
of the SCAPE Biennial 06 (SB06), an urban arts biennial initiated by the
Art & Industry Biennial Trust, established in 1999 in Christchurch,
New Zealand.
This exciting and rare opportunity, supported through funding from Creative
New Zealand Arts Council of New Zealand Toi Aotearoa is for one
New Zealand and one international curator. Once formed, this dynamic curatorial
partnership will be responsible for reflecting Art & Industry’s
philosophical goal of pairing art with industry – acknowledging
and articulating this unique relationship while delivering a distinctive
and impressive national/international outcome for SCAPE 2006.
The SCAPE Art & Industry Urban Arts Biennial is a visual arts festival
which runs during September-November on even years in Christchurch. The
biennials provide a forum for artists to collaborate with industry, develop
new, challenging and innovative visual art works of the highest calibre,
create experiences that will challenge and enrich the lives of the people
of Christchurch and its visitors.
SB06, the fourth biennial to be held by the Art & Industry Biennial
Trust will provide the city with significant, visible art works, generated
through collaboration between artists and industry partners, which are
brokered by the Art & Industry Biennial Trust. The SCAPE Art &
Industry Urban Arts Biennial has grown considerably since inception and
2005/6 sees Art & Industry build on the success of the past three
biennials to develop a comprehensive strategy which focuses on industry,
as well as art. This affirms the original concept of Art & Industry
and our philosophical goal; matching artist with industry’s material,
know-how and resources to make excellent artworks for public enjoyment.
The temporary and permanent artworks developed for SCAPE are the product
of creative endeavour and a partnership with the community. The artists,
curators, planners and project management team work in consultation with
the kaitiaki and guardians of the site, as well as supporting venues.
New artwork concepts are scaled up through supply and equipment installed
by third parties with artists and curators working with industrial partners
to create new works. The SCAPE Biennial therefore articulates a networked
landscape of civic and civil co-operation. A prominence is given to New
Zealand artists’ involvement with the new large scale artworks,
international artists existing works are incorporated in the mix which
to date has seen in 2000 10 national and 4 international artists participating,
in 2002 14 national and 11 international artists participating and in
2004 15 national and 12 international artists participating.
The target budget for SB06 is approximately NZ$1M. This includes all operational,
staffing, infrastructure, promotion and running costs of the event and
the organisation.
The curators will be responsible for building on the existing profile
of the event locally, nationally and internationally through the development
of an outstanding display of urban visual artworks concentrated over Christchurch's
Cultural Precinct for 6 weeks – running from mid September 2006.
Expressions are welcome from curator teams, consisting of one
national and one international curator, but this is not a prerequisite
as Art & Industry is happy to broker relationships between interested
curators.
