scape biennial of Art in Public Space

Christchurch, New Zealand

The SCAPE Biennial of Art in Public Space is New Zealand’s only international biennial dedicated to the exhibition of contemporary art in public space. It is organised by the Art & Industry Biennial Trust.

It is one of, if not the largest producer of new contemporary artwork in New Zealand and has established a vital platform for both national and international artists to develop dynamic, lively and progressive artworks.

The Trust’s vision is to engage local, national and international audiences with outstanding new artworks in public space through partnerships with industry. Matching artist with industry, material, intellectual property and resources enables the production of new innovative artworks, attracting and involving communities in the exploration of contemporary art.

While artists drive their projects, curators, planners and project management teams work with them in consultation with sites and supporting venues to create new artworks, articulating a special civic and civil co-operation. The organisation’s inherent partnership model also includes private and public galleries, the Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetu and other members of Christchurch’s Cultural Precinct.

SCAPE 2006, the 4th Biennial presented by Art & Industry featured 45 artists from 14 countries. Simultaneous to the growth of the artistic programme was that of private and public sector partners, with existing and new partnerships contributing to the event’s local, national and international success.

SCAPE 2008 will be the fifth biennial and the 10 year anniversary of the Art & Industry Biennial Trust. It will provide Christchurch with significant, visible artworks, generated through collaboration between artists and industry partners, brokered by Art & Industry.

In addition to the SCAPE Biennial, the Art & Industry Biennial Trust present a permanent artwork for the city of Christchurch. Programming, publicity and promotion for this is coordinated by Art & Industry and aligned to the opening of SCAPE 2008.
